ORIENTAL RUGS DESERVE LOVE TOO!

The cleaning of Oriental and Specialty rugs is an art not a science.  No matter how many cleaners you speak to you will find that there are many different ways to clean a carpet.  There ARE only two rules that always apply to area rugs – (1) YOU CAN NOT PROPERLY CLEAN AN AREA RUG IN THE HOME.  The carpet must go to a location that has the proper equipment to clean and dry your carpet – where no one is concerned about the floor underneath getting wet or getting solution on it. Only by bringing the carpet to the shop can you exercise the proper techniques required to perform the cleaning process. (2) IN NIAGARA REGION WE’RE THE ONES TO BRING YOUR RUG TO FOR LOVE.

AN INSPECTION IS KEY

We will begin the process of cleaning your rug by doing a thorough inspection to discover any and all concerns – odors, stains, fraying or damage of any sort.  You should have a discussion with your cleaners about any concerns you or they see – what could have caused the mark? What could cause the lighter and darker shades? What is pile distortion or abrash? or What cleaning did you do on your own? Because fringes are difficult to clean and primarily made of cotton if they are not too soiled they should be left alone.

These are examples of what you may find in your own carpets...

WHITE KNOTS - Most rugs have cotton foundations. Cotton warps run throughout the entire length of a rug, and cotton wefts threads run left to right - and are the means by which each row of wool knots are packed into a straight line and held in place. During the weaving and packing process, cotton warps and wefts will break. A broken warp or weft cannot be replaced, so the two broken pieces are tied in a knot and the weaving proceeds. This results in white "knots" in the field of the rug. Most times these cotton knots are trimmed down shorter than the wool face fibers, and they are effectively "hidden" from view. Over time, wearing of the wool reveals these knots and they look like freckles throughout the rug.

ABRASH - Abrash is dye-lot color variation. All pre-dyed wool has tone changes that range from off-white to yellow to grey. When this wool is dyed a particular color, this results in a variety of shading. When one "batch" of red wool (for example) is used up in the weaving process, and the weaver grabs the next "batch" from a slightly different color base wool, this difference is woven into the rug. The result is a dye lot variation that runs side to side (left to right) and appears as "striping" in the rug. This is a characteristic in all handmade rugs, and is considered a characteristic that in many cases adds depth and texture to the overall look of the rugs (especially in vegetable dyed wool).

DOES YOUR CLEANER HAVE A DUSTER YOUR GRANNY DID?

After the inspection the first step in cleaning your carpet is to remove as much of the dry soil particulate from it.  A dusting machine is the most efficient way to do this.  The carpet is put on a grate and turned upside down.  The duster then goes over the carpet and beats the soil out – leather straps hit the backside of the carpet and the soil drops through the grate and onto the surface below.  It is amazing to see how much loose dirt will come out of any given carpet.
We have had rugs that an entire shirt box will be filled with stuff - just from one rugPounds and pounds of soil!!! The wools are particularly efficient at holding on to the soil (that is why it was chosen for area rugs) but it can not resist the action of the duster.  Just like hanging a carpet over the clothes line and beating it with a broom!!

HANG’EM HIGH

Except for the heaviest carpets - all carpets are hung to dry.  When hanging you must ensure that the dye does not bleed into the fringes.  (Hanging, bleeding – what’s next!!)  Fans are blowing at the carpets to speed the drying process.  They are put on the hangers slightly askew to diminish the pressure on the warp and weft lines.  The carpets can be fairly heavy when suspended on the winch so we need to lessen the pressure on the foundation of the carpets - so by simply turning them slightly the worry diminishes.
